OMG LISMORE MARKETS

Very very happy with the impromptu decision to check out the Lismore car boot sale (bi-monthly). The kids were going a bit berzerk but nonetheless my skills from years of sifting through old shit and serious time management skillz (and an amazingly patient hubby who pushed the pram) meant I got to find some goodies. I spent a grand total of $28. Vintage cut off Lee denim shorts, two very feminine hippy skirts, incredible star beanbag for the boys room, and an old moroccan duffel bag for trips away...ahhhh thank you Lismore!

My son Ace who is 3 is officially rad. I know I shouldn't sound surprised but I had a real proud mummy 'picker' moment when he successfully dug through the mountain of old clothes and pulled himself out the two most awesome pieces in the whole pile. Yay for vintage Tin Tin and homemade boardies! Yay for Ace!

HOME GROWN

Whats happening in the garden this week....hmmm...the cucumbers are prolific, the tomatoes are ripening and the beetroots are ready to pick and roast. I also spread some nasturtium seeds about 3 months ago in hopes of harvesting their spicy little flowers for salads, and the seeds all went ballistic and the bees and ants have been loving it! I've told Ace that cucumbers help him ride his bike faster in hopes of inspiring him to eat more than meat, pasta and carrot and sure enough, he happily helps me harvest them while crunching away on his own freshly picked cuc.

Even Bowie loves to have a go. Awesome.

Its been a while since I've blogged my treasure hunting finds, its a weekly if not several times a week adventure for me, garage sales, op shops, side of the road...I think I have a problem sometimes.....So after stopping off at a little op shop in Brunswick Heads I came away with two little treasures, an amazing beaded necklace which I may or may not use for some wooden hanging sculptures, and a little print of a full moon reflecting on a lake...a grand total of $1.75

Having a hard time gaining inspiration lately, life is just so so hectic with two kids. After putting Ace to sleep finally at 8pm I'm so absolutely buggered, it can be hard to start getting creative....ah well, life changes huh. Been going for runs (ah, more like run for 3 minutes, walk the rest of the way, but hey I'll claim its a run) on the beach most days then for a dip in the ocean, its still super warm in the water up here even though winter is on its way. Back to the drawing board, lots of exciting projects coming up especially with my gals at Tallow and also with my main man at Thrills....

Welcome to the world Bowie Moon, the biggest baby born at Mullumbimby Hospital in 2010!

Yes, surprise surprise we have had our second (and last!) child. Bowie was a massive bub, 2 weeks overdue arriving a week before Christmas. Little Sagittarius....life is amazing, so much more challenging having 2 children, but this time next year when Bowie and Ace are running around on the beach, I am sure I will be the proudest mum around!!!

Well, its been a very long time since I last blogged...and life has been anything but boring. Life, Death, Change they are all part of my world since May last year. Life has changed dramatically for me and my family. One of the major changes was moving away from a toxic life into paradise. We welcome the dawn with a family of kookaburras every day, the bull frogs make for music at night and the morning bike ride to the beach with Brooke and Ace is what being a mum is all about. Life is so beautiful when you decide what it is that you want and enjoy the simple things....

Today we got our 'Native' on and headed over to the Australian Reptile Zoo....needless to say Ace's favourite thing was chasing Wood Ducks, and Brooke's chocolate paddle pop. I thought he would be way more into the kangaroos and wallabies that hung around everywhere, they are so domesticated you can cuddle and pet them and feed them too. I looked out for the legendary Roo, Jeffery, but alas he was no where to be seen. He was an outcast from the pack and decided he'd rather hang with the coffee cart than run away....good choice Jeffery. We knew it was time to go when he started scaring the animals with his impersonation of a pterodactyl. That and the giant Emu poo he stood in and wiped all over his father's jeans.

Wow. While cruising one of my favourite websites, butdoesitfloat, I came across this incredible Spanish artist, Yago Hortal www.yagohortal.com . I feel giddy looking at his work, i feel like jumping into those paintings and getting my rainbow on. They look like oil paintings in the photos with how thick and fluid they are, but they are all acrylic on paper, which makes them kind of like a giant child's finger painting. Love love love.

Well, at this time in my life I can count my dearest friends on one hand, its such a beautiful feeling have a handful of women in my life who I know love me as much as I love them. I think as you get older (get the walking stick out) the importance of dear friends grows.....even if you are oceans away the bond stays as strong as if you lived right next door. There is something about a true friend, an unconditional love that allows you to be yourself, warts and all, and still have a laugh, a cry and a cuddle....

OK, here's the thing about having kids. It changes your perspective on just about everything in life. For example, what was once cute and gorgeous, becomes kinda gross and extra work. Take Frankie (pictured above), our beloved pet dog who was abandoned in East LA as a tiny pup. We rescued her, loved her, and let her sleep in bed with us. We got her a friend (love ya bonnie) who has since gone to hang with my parents after a bit of a dog incidence, and we flew them half way across the world for a small fortune......all pre-baby. And then our little 'miracle' arrived and the dogs were out. Living in the yard fending for themselves. Oh yes, they were slung a bowl of food and water, but gone were the days of expensive collars, organic bio-dynamic food and puppy play dates.....move over four legged friends, there's a new baby in town. Frankie is still our beloved little furry friend though she lives outside still, occasionally sneaking inside when no one is looking to catch a bit of her old life...i couldn't resist taking this photo before I shooed her outside, she just looked so darn cute and cuddly.....

Very long time no blog...life has just been too hectic, actually that is no excuse, I have just been putting it off and putting it off for really no reason at all! Freelance has been going off, with lots of creative projects and I have been getting back into the groove of drawing and getting the right side of my brain (the part of my brain that has not been taken over by baby brain) clunking away. I forgot how good it feels to blog, to vent and to collect and publish the cool images i seem to come across everyday on the weird and wonderful world wide web. So here is my first post, I am going to do a few that I have had in the back of my mind to do....enjoy.

BDAY BLITZ

This week it was Brooke's birthday. We just had a mellow one inviting our gorgeous neighbors over for a bbq dinner. Their 6 year old daughter who is the raddest little girl around, wanted to make Brooke a birthday card. Who would buy a birthday card when you can create the most amazing card using glitter pens, sequins, bows and lace from the craft box? I forgot how fun glitter pens were and as we were sitting there creating our masterpieces I thought for a minute that I was 6 years old too! Needless to say, they were a huge hit and Brooke was feeling pretty special.

TSUNAMI SURFIN'

Brooke pushed Ace into his first wave the other day. He loves getting pushed into waves and climbs onto anything he can to lay down and wait for a wave to come along...boogie boards, surfboards, eski lids....As one of my girlfriend's mum put it, "that boy has no fear....I feel for his mother" Its true, he fell of his last wave, tumbled around in the white wash for what felt like 5 hours (more like 2 seconds) and got up laughing. I'm telling you, this little dude is not afraid. When I was painting our house a couple of weeks ago, I left the 6ft ladder standing in the middle of the living room, I went into my bedroom for less than one minute, came out to find Ace at the very top of the ladder banging the red bit on the top. Yes, the TOP of the ladder.

I am considering a monkey backpack that secures your toddler to you. No, seriously.....

On the way back from Bunnings this morning I stopped off at the salvos and found this plate. Its super thick and heavy and homemade. I just can't seem to get away from tribal prints at the moment...its like when you start looking for something it starts appearing everywhere! Anyway, $3.00 later and its sitting on my kitchen/work table. I'm thinking I'll put a candle on it? Fruit? Loose change?

GARAGE SALE FIND

First thing Saturday morning Ace and I did our usual routine (sans Brooke this time) of heading to the local newsagent, picking up The Herald and seeing what garage sales were on for the morning. Unfortunately Ace was getting his grizzle on so it was a one stop wonder....a church bazaar at Belmont Anglican church. We literally did one quick round where I spotted these awesome bracelets for $1 each (*awesome*) paid the lovely nana with coins, and Ace went kung-fu ninja on me and ran out of the door straight for the car park. Needless to say we went straight home for a nap...

I have completely fallen in love with the colours, textures and names of these designs: Eyedazzler, Storm Pattern, Modern Crystal and Wide Ruins. This could be the most appropriate inside neck label for a garment I have ever seen. My darling Brooke found it and emailed it straight over to me. It is so appropriate because being a mum seems to go hand in hand with doing a minimum of 4 loads of laundry a day. Ace is still a mini-human, yet I seem to do enough laundry to keep the entire country smelling clean.

Best Latest Op Shop Find

Okay, so my best latest Op Shop find goes to this old drum case, $80 from the Salvos on Hunter Street. It belonged to a Newcastle reggae band called NATURAL MYSTICS and it has their name and the number 3 (my lucky number, how bout that) sprayed in red on the top. It needed a good wash and a good sand back but now its our coffee table. Plus it opens up so its also great storage...

Friday Morning Walk

So last night could have been one of the worse sleeps we've had since Ace was born, probably a total of 3 hours...Ace is cutting teeth and the whole world has to know about it! He spent most of the night crying, talking, singing, yelling, screaming, and this is all between the hours of midnight and 4am. Much to my dismay this morning, he decided to skip his first nap, so we went for a walk around the neighborhood. Thought I'd take my camera and take some snaps of the little town we live in, Redhead Beach. Back from the walk, I've put him down for a nap, but I can hear him in there singing away, at least there's no crying!

Exactly half way between Sydney and Brisbane, Sawtell is a little beach side town with a great main street. A five hour drive for us, but well worth it!

Its a rainy day here, so taking a break from my freelance art (and while Ace is dancing to the wiggles) I got out my watercolours and made a watery heart. It started as a bubble of water, then I added red and yellow, and then blue and green. Not sure what I'll do with it, if anything, but i just love the way it looks like a crystal!

Ok, so I think in a past life I might have been a sea gull....I just have this love (obsession) with garage sales, council clean up and any other form of treasure finding. So much so that I am going to start blogging about my finds. This one is a bit late, its from Saturday morning garage sales, not an overly fruitful event, however I did find an amazing blanket which will accompany us on our road trip up to byron, an amazing french belt and two beautiful scarves. I'll post my findings from next Saturday's garage sale hunt....

Hi. My name is Tabitha Shafran and this is my blog. I've just kick-started my freelance career after 4 years of designing sunglasses at Sabre, moving half way across the world, buying a house on the internet (yes its true) and having a baby. I just read in the latest Russh magazine (astrology feature rad) that I am officially in my Saturn Returns (dundunduuuunnnn...interject foreboding music here) which means 2 years of challenging grueling nose to the grindstone kinda stuff....after the two years I just had, I was sure that it couldn't get tougher! Thanks universe. I guess its the perfect time for career changes because its a time to work hard and get rewarded. Here's hoping!
